Calling someone a wali

Q: Is it correct to call someone, alive or deceased a wali, or can only the Asharah Mubasharah be considered wali amongst the ummah?
A: Being from the awliya is not confined to the asharah mubasharah or the Sahaabah. Rather, any ummati can also be from the awliya through leading a life that conforms to the sunnah of Rasulullah (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) in all facets and through refraining from sins. Nevertheless, it should be borne in mind that the greatest of awliya of this ummah are the Sahaabah. Thereafter, comes the position of the other awliya, and the greatest of the awliya from besides the Sahaabah cannot reach the rank of the lowest Sahaabi.
