Replying to the Salaam of a non-Muslim

Q: A non muslim made salaam to my friend,when he didn't reply he (non muslim) asked is there a mention in Quran (Majeed) or hadeeth that a muslim can't reply to the slaam of a non muslim. What should be the answer?

A: You don’t have to answer a non Muslim like how you don’t have to reply to his salaam. There is no need to answer his question pertaining to secondary matters when he does not accept the primary matters of faith.

وعن أنس قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا سلم عليكم أهل الكتاب فقولوا وعليكم (مشكاة رقم 4637)
